A Story for the Little Ones: Jay’s Harmony

Once, in the Heartwood Forest, lived a Blue Jay named Jayce. Jayce had a very loud, very scratchy voice. While the robins sang sweet lullabies, Jayce would go "Squawk! Squawk!"

One afternoon, Jayce noticed that the squirrels were losing their winter acorns to a sneaky fox, and the rabbits couldn't hear the fox coming over the rustling leaves. The forest animals weren't talking to each other, and everyone was a little bit afraid.

Jayce realized he had a gift. He flew to the highest branch of the Great Oak. Instead of a quiet song, he let out a mighty, ringing cry that echoed through every burrow and nest.

"Danger near! Work together!" he seemed to say.

The squirrels heard him and hid. The rabbits huddled close. But then, Jayce did something even better. He used his voice to mimic the hawk, scaring the fox away for good.

Seeing how Jayce saved them, the animals came out of hiding. They realized that while Jayce wasn't a singer, he was a protector. They began to talk to one another, building a "Forest Watch" system. Jayce became the leader, using his loud voice to call everyone to morning meetings. He taught the forest that a community isn't built on having the prettiest song—it’s built on looking out for one another.
